How to Hire a Designer
Hiring the right interior designer is crucial to achieving your vision. So, where should you start?
Planning. Before you make the first phone call, define your the scope of the project. List prioritized goals, budgeted investment, and timeline for the project. Make sure each decision maker in the family participates so you can present a plan in which everyone is aligned.
Inspiration
With limitless resources at your fingertips, create a visual representation of your style and design preferences. Scour Instagram, Pinterest, and shelter magazines for images that resonate with you. Don’t worry about being literal with your space versus an aspirational room, a good designer can interpret your vision during the design process. Again, each decision maker should participate to ensure cohesion in the design vision. Share your inspiration with potential designers during the consultation.
Recommendations
Has a friend or colleague completed a project that impressed you? Asking people you trust for recommendations can be invaluable. Find out what they liked about working with the designer and to describe a challenge from the project.
Visualization
Scour the portfolios and social media of designers you are considering. Their work represents a range of what you can expect aesthetically from the firm. If there is a disconnect between what you see and your personal style, move on. I promise, there is a designer out there for you!
Consultations
Schedule discovery calls with several interior designers to discuss your project, budget, timeline, and expectations. Ask the designers about their process, fees, and availability.
Hire the designer you connect with for an in-person consultation to see your project. All decision makers should be present for this meeting (a requirement for our firm). After the
consultation, the designer should create a proposal based on the scope of work.
Check References
Request references from the designers you are considering and follow-up with those references to gain insight into their professionalism, communication skills, and the quality of their work.
Communication
Is this a person with whom you connect and can envision working closely? Does the designer understand your vision?
Finances
Get a clear understanding of the designer's fee structure. Some designers charge a flat fee, while others work on an hourly basis or charge a percentage of the project cost. A letter of agreement should outline the scope of work, deliverables, timeline, communication, and payment methods, contract terms, conditions, and fees. If you aren’t sure about something, ask. This contract will govern your project and everyone needs to be on the same page.
ENJOY!!! Designing your home is exciting! Enjoy the process, stay true to your vision and needs, and communicate early and often.
